People with Parkinson’s disease may have a variety of symptoms. They can vary from person to person, and the symptoms may be mild at first, then worsen over time. Parkinson’s symptoms can affect one’s ability to walk and to think clearly. The person may also experience sleep problems, depression, and forgetfulness. Depending on the symptoms, patients may also experience restless legs. Some of these symptoms may be caused by other medical conditions.

Early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are often mild and do not interfere with daily activities. They may affect one side of the body at first. As the condition progresses, the symptoms may become more severe and affect both sides of the body. However, the symptoms may not be noticeable to other people, so the patient may not need medical attention. In later stages, patients may become physically dependent and bedridden, which means they may need help to complete everyday tasks.

The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease may be hard to detect at the early stage, but doctors trained in nervous system conditions can make the correct diagnosis with a physical examination and neurological examination. The doctor may also order imaging tests to rule out other disorders. If Parkinson’s disease is suspected, a patient may have to undergo a neuroscopy to confirm the diagnosis. This will help the doctor to monitor progression of symptoms and rule out other illnesses.

Essential tremor is a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease. It is characterized by an involuntary rhythmic tremor in the arms, hands, and head. It is often inherited, and affects the globus pallidus interna, a part of the brain that regulates muscle tone. Essential tremor causes a person to become stiff and unable to turn his or her body.

In addition to the tremor, a person with the disease will develop an abnormal movement pattern. A person with Parkinson’s disease will have difficulties walking, making U-turns, and distributing their weight evenly between both feet. They should also refrain from carrying things while walking. Lastly, people with Parkinson’s disease may also experience difficulties with speech. An occupational therapist can help with these issues and teach the patient techniques to make daily activities easier.

Many patients can maintain a good quality of life with Parkinson’s disease medications. However, patients may experience “motor fluctuations” after starting medications. In some cases, patients move without difficulty during the “on” periods, but have trouble controlling themselves when they’re “off” (just before their next medication dose). Medications are often effective in managing motor fluctuations and help patients maintain a good quality of life.

Lightheadedness is another common symptom of Parkinson’s disease. It is caused by the body’s inability to regulate blood pressure quickly. This can cause fainting and blackouts. In addition, people with Parkinson’s disease are at higher risk for developing melanoma, so they should undergo annual skin exams and discuss any troubling skin lesions with their physician. This condition can also lead to constipation and an altered sense of smell.

Exercise can help people with Parkinson’s disease improve their flexibility, balance, and range of motion. It may also improve mood, which may be useful in battling depression. Exercise is also beneficial for reducing muscle tension. A patient may participate in a support group, join a gym, or learn Tai chi.

People with Parkinson’s disease can experience several non-motor symptoms, such as apathy, depression, and constipation. These symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time. Some people may even have an entirely different symptom from the person with Parkinson’s disease. Although it’s not a curable disease, it can be managed with medication and lifestyle changes.

If the symptoms are severe, a neurologist may prescribe a trial medication. The patient may also undergo a series of neurological tests. Usually, two primary motor symptoms are required for a diagnosis. These symptoms include tremor and rigidity. Other symptoms may include speech problems, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking. PD is a progressive disorder that requires treatment. However, the symptoms can be successfully managed for a substantial amount of time, often over a period of years.
