If you feel pain in your abdomen, you should visit your doctor. While most of the reasons are minor and can be treated without surgery, some are more serious and should be treated by a physician. Read on to learn what these symptoms are and how to identify them. Listed below are the most common reasons why someone may feel pain in the abdomen.

Bloating is a common symptom of an overstuffed stomach. The actual abdominal size increases. If you have persistent abdominal bloating, you should measure its circumference and determine if it is a common or a chronic condition. Bloating can also be a sign of an inflammatory bowel disease or an overgrowth of bacterial flora. While the causes of these symptoms are varied, they are often related to poor diet or chronic bowel disease.

An underactive thyroid can slow down your digestive system, resulting in bloating, gas, and other unpleasant symptoms. Other causes of stomach symptoms include parasites in the intestines. These can attach to the stomach lining, small intestine, colon, or both, and can cause a range of unwanted symptoms. You should visit your doctor if the symptoms persist for more than a few days. A medical consultation may be necessary if these symptoms are prolonged or severe.

In Iranian traditional medicine books, gastroparesis refers to feeling stuffed after a meal. This condition is caused by a disease or surgery that stunts the electrical system of the stomach. The symptoms are common, but you can have it treated. Medications that stimulate the contraction of the stomach can speed up digestion. If you experience post-meal pain, it could be due to an ulcer, obstruction, or tumor in the esophagus.

The risk of developing stomach cancer is not small. Adenocarcinoma, the most common type of stomach cancer, begins in the glandular cells that line the stomach. Unlike other cancers, stomach cancer is not contagious and cannot be transmitted to others. Increasing age also increases the risk of developing stomach cancer. Statistics show that almost 95 out of every 100 people will develop stomach cancer at some point in their life. If you have any of these symptoms, visit your doctor for an evaluation.

Symptoms of a peptic ulcer can include pain and discomfort in the abdomen, bloating, and heartburn. In some cases, the ulcer may be caused by an overproduction of acid. This account for less than 1% of all peptic ulcer cases. However, the most common cause is overproduction of acid by the stomach itself. Although this cause is rare, it should be suspected if the stomach pain persists after a meal.

Diverticulitis is an inflammation of one of the organs in the digestive tract, which is usually the colon. If left untreated, this condition can lead to severe pain, bleeding, and perforations, and may require surgery. This is why it is critical to find the right treatment for this condition. The sooner you start treating your pain, the better. You can prevent the onset of a serious disease. The symptoms of a diverticulitis may indicate an underlying condition, like colon cancer or diabetes.
