What Are Leukemia Symptoms? Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow. During normal circumstances, the bone marrow makes billions of new blood cells a day. Normally, most of these cells are red. However, in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces more white blood cells than the body needs. Those abnormal blood cells spill out into the bloodstream, and they spread to other organs.

One of the most common symptoms of leukemia in children is increased fatigue. This fatigue can be due to a number of conditions, such as an underlying infection. If the child’s white blood cells are affected, they may experience a fever and frequent infections. The lymph nodes in the body are an important part of the immune system and can also become swollen. These nodes filter fluid and potentially harmful substances, and leukemia cells can spread to these lymph nodes. Because lymph nodes can be felt as small, fluid-filled lumps under the skin, these symptoms indicate the presence of leukemia.

The presence of collections of monocytes may also lead to liver enlargement. People with leukemia should immediately see a doctor if they develop these symptoms. People with leukemia have a reduced ability to fight infections, and even minor ones can be deadly. Without white blood cells, the body can’t fight microorganisms. As a result, a weakened immune system leaves the body more vulnerable to infections, including the chickenpox virus and cytomegalovirus. This lack of immune system also makes people more vulnerable to infections, causing confusion and drenching night sweats.

The following list of symptoms of leukemia may be difficult to recognize. Most are attributed to other conditions, so you should seek a doctor to get a proper diagnosis. If the symptoms persist or worsen, a diagnosis is essential for treatment. Leukemia Symptoms

The diagnosis of leukemia is based on several tests. Some of these tests identify the type of leukemia and how far it has spread. The information gathered will help your doctor design the best treatment for you. A bone marrow biopsy is a common way to confirm a diagnosis. A small sample of bone marrow is removed and tested for leukemia. A complete blood count is another test used to determine the type of leukemia in an individual. It examines the size and number of blood cells and also determines how advanced the cancer is. Other blood tests may include a blood chemical level and liver and kidney functions.

Petechiae are pinpoint-sized spots that form when a capillary breaks under the skin. The capillary contains platelets, which help the blood clot. Because of this, leukemia affects platelet counts, preventing it from clotting. Afterward, blood exits the capillary and rises to the surface. When the capillary is broken, the blood exits and the blood rises toward the surface of the skin.

Although leukemia has a high mortality rate, the numbers of people living with this disease have decreased over the last decade. In fact, the 5-year survival rate for patients with all types of leukemia has increased by almost two percent. That number is still far from definitive, though. Individuals should work with their medical team to determine the best treatment for their specific condition. There are new treatments and options available for patients with leukemia that have better outcomes and fewer side effects.

Treatment for leukemia often includes chemotherapy. This treatment kills cancer cells in the body and stops them from growing. Chemotherapy drugs may be given intravenously, orally, or both. It is usually given in cycles, so the body can recover from the side effects of the treatment. Other treatments may include radiation therapy. Radiation therapy uses high energy X-rays to target the leukemia cells. Although radiation therapy doesn’t cure leukemia, it can be effective in treating symptoms and preventing relapse.

Several types of leukemia can cause symptoms. Chronic myelogenous leukemia affects adults, but children can also develop the disease. People with certain conditions, such as Down syndrome, are at a greater risk of developing this disease. Some types of leukemia are genetic, or may be the result of an uncontrollable blood-clotting disorder. In some cases, radiation therapy is associated with an increased risk of developing leukemia.

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type in children, although it can occur in adults as well. Acute lymphocytic leukemia affects the majority of children and older adults, while chronic myelogenous leukemia affects children and the elderly. Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) usually does not show symptoms until a person has reached middle age.
